How to Make a Bow out of Ribbon
If you want to learn how to make a bow out of ribbon, there are many ways that you can do it. Just a few of my favorite types of hairbows for beginners are:
If you’ve never made one before, I’d start off with a basic bow and then work your way up to more difficult bows like layered bows and boutique bows. Just take time to practice each type of bow and then you can advanced to other designs. You can even start to layer bows, loops, and sprays to make a gorgeous boutique style or “over the top” hairbow.
To find wholesale ribbon, I like to use The Ribbon Retreat. If you just want a few rolls of different colors and styles of grosgrain ribbon then I’d suggest Hobby Lobby. Be sure to go on a week where they have rolls for 50% off and you’ll be able to save a lot of money. Remember that this doesn’t have to be an expensive craft if you use coupons, buy in bulk, or purchase when on clearance or from a dollar bin at a fabric store.

This loopy bow was made by happy customer, Joyce.
As you can see from these two photos, you can use ribbon to make ALL kinds of styles of bows once you learn how to make a bow out of ribbon. That is the great thing about using ribbon to create; there are so many options for fabrics, colors, prints, and sizes that the options are practically limitless. You can use the ribbon to make a bunch of loops that will create a loopy bow or you can make a few sizes of bows and add some sprays like the boutique bow that Christy made. I love how both women used a variety of colors to really make their hairbows unique and beautiful. This really allows you to be creative.
Ribbon can be turned into so many different types of beautiful bows. Although there are many things that you can create loops with, ribbon is the most popular way to go and typically the cheapest as well.
Ribbon can be found in a variety of widths ranging from very thin (1/4 inch) to very wide (3 inches and wider). For basic creations you’ll need a few types such as 3/8 inch and 7/8 inch; those are the two most popular choices for the majority of hairbows you’ll make. The wider ribbons will be for cheer bows and OTT larger bows so you don’t have to worry about trying to find them unless you are creating those types. The wider ribbon has to be special ordered online since craft stores do not carry them in stock.
